Imelda May Profiled

Imelda May ( Profiled ) by Alan Finn.

Born in the “Liberties, area, of Dublin City, Imelda Mary Clabby, as she was known then, was the youngest of the Clabby clan.
Imelda was born 10th July, 1974, she was raised a stone throw from (PB ) Prime Blings (HQ ) here in the Dublin 8 area.

Hometown Dublin City.

Her career, began to take shape at the sweet age of sweet 16. She started to sing with local musicians and local groups.
It was in 2002, she formed her own group.
She released her debut album one year later ( 2003 ) titled, No Turning Back, on the ( Foot Tapping record label.

Shortly after the release of ” No Turning Back, , ” Imelda, left Dublin to live in London, with her then husband, and musician ” Darrel Higham.
She also chose London to promote her album, ” No Turning Back.

Between gigs and writing new stuff it was a few years before Imelda May, came back in to the public spot light.

In 2008, Imelda released her second album titled, Love Tattoo.

Imelda, toured and collaborated with various musicians and artists to promote the new album.

Love Tattoo, was well received not only in Ireland, but England, and as far away as the states.
Love Tattoo, made it to number one on the Irish album charts.
Love Tattoo, caught the attention of Jools Holland, which saw “Imelda perform on his show, on BBC the show was called, Later, with Jools Holland.

Imelda, also played support to Jools Holland on tour. It was on this tour that Imelda was playing to audionce that included ” Jeff Beck, Elbow and “ Roots Manuva.
Her first two singles of the Love Tattoo, album were released on Jan 23rd 2009, and they were ” Johnny Got Boom Boom, and Big Bad Handsome Man.

Those of us who live in Ireland, will remember ” Johnny Got Boom, Boom, thanks to a TV add, as it was part of a television ad for Credit Unions.
In 2009, “Imelda, appeared on RTE’s ( Irish TV Station, on a show called, The Late Late, Show.
In the same year Imelda, 2009, Imelda won ” Female Artists Of The Year,on the Irish Meteor Awards. This was followed by a tour in the states.
In August 2009, Imelda appeared on another RTE, television show called, ” Other Voices.

In January 2010, Imelda appeared on the ” 52nd, Grammy Awards, with Jeff Beck, in a tribute to ” Les Paul.
This was followed by more tours, and festivals including ” Euro-sonic Festival, in Groningen, Netherlands.

In September of the same year 2010, Imelda released her 3rd Studio album, ” Mayhem, It again did very well in Ireland topping the top of the charts, and peaking in at number 4 in the UK album charts.
The following year 2011, Imelda made a TV appearance, on american TV screens on the tonight show, with Jay Leno, performing Mayhem, to promote the album’s USA release.

Imelda, contributed a cover of the late Buddy Holly’s , I am Looking for Someone To Love, for a tribute album titled, Listen To Me Buddy Holly, that was released in September of 2011.

Although she is known for her singing Rockabilly style songs, “Imelda, can play various musical instruments, including Bass Guitar, Bodhran, and the Tambourine.
She has often been compared to the likes of “Billie Holiday, to name just one.

In April 2014, Imelda released her 4th Studio album, titled, Tribal, again it topped the Irish number one, spot, while it peaked at number 3, In the UK album chart, and it charted in New Zealand, going into the top 20.
Imelda, released two tracks of that album and they were released one in March of 2014, Titled ” It Good To Be alive, and the other one in April of 2014, titled ” Wild Woman.

In 2016 , Imelda performed , ” Its Not Easy Bein Green, at RTE’s Centenary Concert, to mark the 100 anniversary of the Irish Easter Rising.

Imelda May, has worked with other great musicians including greats like, the late ” Lou Reed, Jeff Beck, Jools Holland, Tom Jones, Damien Dempsey, Mary Black, Sharon Shannon, The Dubliners, The Chieftains, Meatloaf, Paul Brady, the list just goes on and on.

Imelda, has also worked on stage with, U2, Paul Brady, Lulu, Sinead O’Connor, Wanda Jackson, The Bootown Rats, Elvis Costello, Marc Almond, Tom Jones, Irish group Kodaline, and of lately Jamie Cullum.

Again the list she has worked with on the stage is huge, and if her past is anything to go by, we will be seeing a lot of Imelda May, in the future,
